He who frames the debate claims the debate.

Words are weapons in politics. Choose the right ones, and you can steer the discussion whichever way you want; refuse to challenge the wrong ones, and you're locked into whatever meaning your opponent gives them.

This is the unfortunate reality of modern American politics. Whether deliberate or simply the result of bringing different worldviews to the table, the rhetoric we use in political arguments is often imprecise, misleading, even deceptive. Author Kris Wampler takes a look at some of the most egregious words and phrases that have become part of our discourse - and why they're destroying honest debate. From "fairness" and "greed" to "protecting marriage" and "gun control," Wampler explains how much of what is said in politics is designed to manipulate the conversation rather than discover the truth.

This brief polemic provides an interesting insight into the mind of a person whose views are well to the right of the Republican Party. Critical of both parties, Mr. Wampler especially criticizes those who unfavorably label his views. While labeling the Federal Reserve and other banking institutions "an unholy alliance," the author resents his opponents' use of the word "extremist."

This work is "balanced" only in its disparagement of both political parties: the Democrats for their use of loaded words critical of those to the right -- and Republicans for their failure to be more rigidly opposed to Democratic initiatives, and for their failure to be as far to the right as Mr. Wampler.

I was hoping for more rhetorical insight as to the abuses of political rhetoric--not just an exposition of the views of the far right.

Lexicon The Rhetoric Liberals and Conservatives Use to Kill Honest Debate edition by Kris Wampler Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

It's refreshing to see somebody finally point out that our nation's political dialog is fundamentally broken. We love to debate politics, but often times we're more concerned with using tricks of language to spin the discussion towards a predetermined "liberal" or "conservative" viewpoint rather than attempting to find a common ground or a measure of truth. Kris Wampler does a nice job here pointing out how both the Democrat and Republican parties use rhetoric to further an agenda rather than help find solutions to our country's many problems. Wampler writes from the libertarian viewpoint, which is a position that is growing in popularity but still is not often given a place at the table in our national debate. Good reading for anybody who is a student of politics or is simply tired of spin and deception.
Kris Wampler proves to be as good at using words himself as he is at analyzing the word choices of others. I am doubtful that I have ever come across a politically-themed book with such refreshingly smooth language. Yet, Lexicon remains thoughtful and intelligent nonetheless.

Readers may or may not agree with the author's personal beliefs (although some will undoubtedly love it) but the genius of this book is that it does not matter. Kris Wampler has a unique talent to simultaneously admit to his bias while expertly reviewing the political landscape without that bias interfering with the conclusions.

Perhaps, best of all, never while reading this book did I feel like a fast one was trying to be pulled on me. The concept would not have been successful had the author been just as guilty in using deceptive language or caught arguing the current party line. Whether you are interested in seeing politicians of every stripe taken down a notch or simply looking for an original point of view, either way you will find this book to be a real gem.
